COLUMBUS, OH — Buckeye State University unveiled its redesigned 2025 graduation caps Saturday morning, each now equipped with a tamper-proof QR code that automatically enrolls the wearer in their assigned federal loan repayment plan the precise moment the tassel is moved from right to left.

According to the university, the chip activates on a six-degree pivot, syncs with the student’s phone via Bluetooth, and triggers a welcome push notification from the loan servicer reading ‘Congrats, grad! Your first payment of $487 is due in 14 days. Reply STOP to unsubscribe (you cannot unsubscribe).’

‘The old system, where graduates had a brief delusional summer before the bills started, was inefficient,’ said BSU Director of Financial Outcomes Lindsey Marek-Hauer, adjusting a lanyard that read TASSEL COMPLIANCE. ‘Now we capture them at peak emotional vulnerability, while their grandmother is still crying. Conversion rates are extraordinary.’

The caps are also equipped with a small speaker that plays Nelnet hold music if a graduate attempts to descend the stage stairs without a confirmed scan, a feature Marek-Hauer described as ‘gently corrective.’ Three students at Friday’s rehearsal reportedly froze mid-step until a bursar with a handheld scanner could be flagged down.

‘I felt the buzz in my pocket before my mom even got the photo,’ said graduate Tyler Ngo, 22, who majored in marketing and minored in ‘a thing my advisor called Strategic Communications that I am now realizing was the same thing.’ ‘The notification said welcome to adulthood. Then it said my interest rate. Then it said have a magical day.’

Parents in the audience were issued complimentary commemorative programs that doubled as cosigner reaffirmation forms, while a separate kiosk near the photo booth offered to refinance any loan taken out before 2018 for what one usher called ‘a small ceremonial fee and your dignity.’ A father from Dayton was seen scanning the program three times before realizing he had agreed to extend his daughter’s repayment term to 2061.

University officials confirmed the caps will also broadcast the graduate’s projected lifetime debt total during the recessional, set to a brass arrangement of ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ subtly remixed in a minor key. A pilot version tested last week reportedly caused six students to sit down in the aisle and require what the program described as ‘pastoral intervention from a Career Services representative.’

At press time, Marek-Hauer was overseeing installation of a new feature for the 2026 ceremony in which the diploma itself dissolves on contact with skin if the graduate has not yet selected a payment plan, leaving behind only a small adhesive square that says GOOD LUCK OUT THERE.
