ASHEVILLE, NC — Guests arriving at the Buchanan-Pell wedding Thursday afternoon were handed a sage-green linen tote containing a $14 hangover patch, a four-ounce jar of locally foraged granola, a hand-letterpressed itinerary, and a wooden token engraved with a QR code that, when scanned, opens a 38-page prenuptial agreement hosted on Dropbox.

The bag, presented to all 142 attendees at check-in alongside a chilled cucumber water, is being described by the couple’s wedding planner as ‘a gesture of radical transparency’ and ‘on-trend for the asset-aware bride.’

‘Couples this season are really leaning into financial honesty as a love language,’ said Marin Calloway, lead coordinator at a Charleston-based event firm whose Instagram bio reads ‘Logistics, but make it tender.’ ‘The prenup used to be something you hid in a safe. Now it’s part of the favor. We’re seeing brides print the asset schedule on the back of the seating chart.’

The Buchanan-Pell document, scannable in roughly two seconds with any iPhone, lays out separate ownership of a Brooklyn one-bedroom, three index funds, a 2019 Subaru Outback, and ‘any future earnings derived from podcast monetization.’ Guests at table 7 reportedly read it aloud during the salad course and gave it a 6 out of 10.

The bride, a brand strategist who spent eight months sourcing the granola from a single farm in Madison County, told her maid of honor she wanted the welcome bag to ‘reflect who we are as a couple,’ which her father later confirmed meant ‘people who have already met with three lawyers.’

The trend has spread quickly across the wedding-industrial complex, where vendors report increased demand for what one Etsy seller is marketing as ‘Prenup Placards’ — small acrylic signs reading ‘Scan here for our boundaries’ propped between the escort cards and the disposable cameras. A Nashville stationer offers a deluxe tier that prints the document on cotton fiber paper inside a cigar box for $340.

Not all guests have welcomed the candor. One uncle, who had driven in from Knoxville expecting a normal Bud Light situation, was overheard at the bar asking the bartender whether the tote also came with ‘a fucking deposition schedule.’ The bartender, who said she has worked twelve weddings this season, confirmed it was the third prenup QR code she had seen in May alone.

The groom, when asked about the bag’s contents during cocktail hour, said he was ‘fully on board’ and ‘honestly relieved’ the document was now publicly searchable, adding that it cut down on ‘the awkward part where my college roommate asks about the apartment.’ He then excused himself to take a photo with a golden retriever wearing a flower crown.

By 9 p.m., scans of the QR code had reportedly crossed 380, several of them from people not in attendance. The couple’s lawyer, present as a guest, was seen quietly updating a clause near the dessert table.
